Does anybody write kids-with-strange-powers better than Stephen King? And, is there anyone on the scene who has more insider knowledge of the publishing industry? Later, King s third Hard Case Crime installment, threads both of these into a single short novel that packs a punch.
Jamie is a kid who can see dead people, and his single mom is a literary agent willing to do whatever she has to in order to keep bread on the table, never mind the literary ethics. Before you get nervous that this is that same The Sixth Sense dynamic we all know and sort of love, sort of dread, Jamie, our narrator, is well aware of M. Night Shyamalan s 1999 film. More importantly, King seems aware that The Sixth Sense is basically a superhero origin story: A kid figures out his powers, looks around, and then tries to make the world a better place.

The HBO docuseries Allen v. Farrow returned for its second installment Sunday night, focusing on the early stages of director Woody Allen s relationship with Soon-Yi Previn, the daughter of his then-girlfriend, Mia Farrow. Farrow discovered the affair, as Allen called it, when she found explicit photos of Previn at Allen s apartment just seven months after her high school graduation.
Farrow and Allen s relationship was already under great strain because of an unhealthy power dynamic, according to the series, as well as Allen s alleged inappropriate behavior toward their young daughter, Dylan. In October 1895, the most mysterious mechanisms of the mind suddenly clicked into place for Sigmund Freud. The Viennese psychoanalyst reported his discovery in a breathless letter to his colleague and confidant, Wilhelm Fliess. After an industrious night, he wrote, the barriers suddenly lifted, the veils dropped, and everything became transparent - from the details of the neuroses to the determinants of consciousness. The result of that night was one of Freud s earliest works, the forbiddingly titled Project for a Scientific Psychology.
